Few things are more frustrating than being locked out of your home. But as our lifestyles become increasingly more hectic, getting locked out is becoming more and more common.
But don’t panic, getting locked out is not the end of the world, although it might feel like it at the time. You just need to follow a few simple steps to get back inside without resorting to breaking in.
1. Call A Roommate Or Family Member
The first thing to do is to call a family member or roommate. Even if they are at work or in class, this is the easiest way of getting back into your home without having to break a window.
Arrange to meet them at work or college to collect a spare key. If you can’t reach them immediately, don’t worry, leave a simple message explaining the situation and ask them to call you back as soon as possible.
2. Check For Open Windows
Before doing anything else, it’s a good idea to check for any open windows or doors. While it’s not good practice to leave windows open, if you have only been out for a few minutes, you may have decided to risk it.
However, try not to get into the habit of leaving windows open. The Australian Bureau of Statistics, estimates that 1 in 66 homes are burgled each year, with the vast majority of intruders gaining access through unsecured windows or doors.
3. Locate A Spare Key
This requires a little forethought, but it’s a good idea to place a spare key with a trusted neighbour or friend. This may not always work because there is no guarantee they will be at home when you get locked out. Or it may be the middle of the night.
Another more reliable but less secure option is to hide a key in a secret place that only you and your family know about. But make sure the hiding place is not an obvious one, such as under a plant pot or doormat. More secure solutions are available today such as key safes disguised as rocks.
4. Call A Professional Locksmith
Finally, if all else fails, you need to call a professional locksmith. This is usually the safest and easiest way to get back into your home. Don’t worry about the cost, as most locksmiths charge a flat fee for gaining access, and we are very experienced, so it only takes a few minutes.
When choosing a locksmith in New South Wales, make sure they have a security business master license. This ensures they are properly trained, insured and certified to carry out security work on your property.
